The MOEA Deepens Cooperation with Asian Partners on Low Carbon Strategy to Promote Energy Transition and Net-Zero Economic Development
In line with the global trend toward net-zero carbon emissions, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) hosted the "2024 EXCHANGE FORUM ON ASIA LOW EMISSION STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP" on October 3, 2024. The forum attracted around 70 participants from the government, industry, and academia, including policymakers, business representatives, and experts from Asian countries. They engaged in in-depth discussions on strategies for energy transition and the practical implementation of net-zero economy initiatives in order to inject new momentum into low-carbon development and climate action in the Asian region.
Policy and technology leaders from Singapore, Malaysia, and other ASEAN countries attended the forum. In anticipation of the upcoming COP29 (the UN Climate Change Conference), discussions emphasized the urgency of decarbonization and explored how Asian countries could achieve breakthroughs in energy transition and green growth. The forum focused on two major themes: “Accelerating Energy Transition Strategies” and “Advancing Digitalization and Sustainable Net-Zero Transformation.” Several experts explained their national policies and innovative technologies, while highlighting the importance of regional cooperation.
Chin-Sung Cheng, the Economic Counselor of the International Trade Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs, stressed that Taiwan would continue to deepen cooperation with its Asian partners on low carbon strategy and pursue energy transition and net-zero goals through technological innovation and policy support. Dr. Zi-Lun Lin, Deputy Executive Director of the Executive Yuan’s Energy and Carbon Reduction Office, expressed his hope that international cooperation would drive green growth and turn crises into opportunities. Participants from various countries also shared their views about challenges and solutions in promoting low-carbon development, thereby facilitating interaction on experiences and opening new avenues for cooperation.
By the end of the forum, participants reached a consensus on strengthening regional cooperation, particularly the development of clean energy technologies and carbon market mechanisms. Taiwan remained committed to advancing low-carbon innovation and, together with its Asian partners, driving low-carbon strategies and green economic growth towards the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
